“Closing the Loop”

December 10, 2019

1)  The focus of today’s faculty assembly was communication—among faculty, between faculty and our Senate representatives, and with campus leadership. In keeping with this theme, all faculty are encouraged to visit the Senate webpage to get to know their Senate and its initiatives.  All are also encouraged to take advantage of the electronic High-5 system to recognize their colleagues for their outstanding contributions or unsung virtues. The High-5 system can be accessed here: https://high5.unthsc.edu .

2)  The value of strong and supportive relationships in our work rose to the top among the hundreds of comments gathered during the September faculty assembly. These sentiments make clear that our work depends as much on the support of others as anything we bring as individuals, so thanks to each of you who take the time to mentor, develop, and contribute to the success of those around you.

3)  President Williams shared highlights from ongoing and coming strategic initiatives.  These include the development of “micro-credentialing” programs and the positioning of UNTHSC to train future healthcare professionals for a new healthcare landscape that may exist as often in virtual settings as physical.  Williams also introduced a coming initiative to shore up the personal well-being of the HSC community by enhancing critical skills in personal financial management.  We applaud these and other efforts that not only build toward an increasingly strong and impactful HSC mission but also recognize and contribute to the wellness of the students, staff, faculty, and others who make up the HSC community.

4)  Finally, we are glad to be able to honor outstanding faculty colleagues through the coming 2020 Faculty Achievement Awards.

Nominations are now being accepted, and all are encouraged to recognize those who go above and beyond for our students, our disciplines, our communities, and our campus.  More information on the nomination process and guidelines can be found at https://www.unthsc.edu/office-of-faculty-affairs/wp-content/uploads/sites/91/CallforNomination_Announcement_Draft-2020-Final.pdf

UNTHSC as a “Best Place for All”

September 10, 2019

MET 109

September’s Faculty Assembly provided a unique opportunity to understand how our talented faculty come to and remain at UNTHSC.  The Faculty Senate facilitated ‘table topic’ discussions focused on identifying how our campus contributes to a rewarding work-life and career longevity for our faculty.   Common themes from the discussion included the supportive, collegial atmosphere for researchers and teaching faculty alike, as well as the HSC’s very strong focus on providing an excellent, student-focused education.  Comments came from faculty with experience ranging from 2 weeks to 44 years on campus, but all had personal and often poignant stories of how their professional journey has led them to UNTHSC.

Your Senate’s communications committee expects to have a summary of the evening’s discussion available to share with campus leadership, and all faculty, soon.  Thanks to all of those who attended and participated in the assembly, and made it a success!
