Sophia Brockman’s Experience at HSC

Sophia Brockman, Student Services Specialist, Office of Care and Civility

What attracted you to HSC?

As a student in the College of Public Health at HSC, I was deeply impressed by both the college’s and HSC’s commitment to holistic health and diversity. During my time there, I had the opportunity to intern with the Office of Care and Civility, where I contributed to the Be|Well initiative by developing pilot programs focused on preventing burnout among students. That experience gave me firsthand insight into the incredible teams within HSC and the DSA, all dedicated to supporting student success both on campus and beyond. It solidified my desire to remain part of the HSC community long after graduation!

What is your team like?

My team is made up of incredibly compassionate individuals, and it means the world to have such unwavering support — not just from the OCC office, but throughout the DSA as well. Every day, I feel encouraged and motivated by the people around me. A special thanks to Andrew Arvay, Alex Cooper, and Dr. Lauren Carter for championing my ideas and allowing me to pilot some exciting initiatives on campus. Their constant encouragement has made these projects possible. I truly enjoy working with my team and look forward to every opportunity to collaborate with them each week!

What is the most unique part about working here?

The most unique parts is the diverse backgrounds and knowledge every student, faculty, and staff has. I get to work with people every day who have had such rich experiences that I get to learn from.

How have you grown professionally while working at HSC?

I have grown professionally by taking on opportunities to design and implement pilot programs that focus on student wellbeing, allowing me to contribute more meaningfully to our students’ success. Through attending workshops, engaging in professional development, and collaborating with colleagues, I have gained new skills and tools that have not only enhanced my ability to create impactful programming but have also strengthened my overall role here at HSC. These experiences have broadened my perspective and deepened my commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our student community.
