Cancer is second leading cause of death in the US and is a research
priority area. The annual NCI budget of over $5 billion dollars (the
highest in the NIH), and the $3 billion dollars funding earmarked for
cancer research in Texas under the state’s CPRIT initiative,  and other
funding sources, present opportunities on which UNTHSC can leverage and
build its research portfolio. UNTHSC through its three schools is one
of, if not the only institution in the region, that has the unique
capacity to conduct cancer research in the areas of basic laboratory,
translational, clinical, epidemiologic, and community research.
