About the Program

Choose the best program for you

UNT Health offers its Master of Public Health Online as both a 48-credit hour program, which is best for recent graduates and career changers, and a 42-credit hour program, which is best suited for those with at least three years of work experience in public health or medical professions or for applicants that already hold an advanced degree or are enrolled in a dual graduate program.

Students can also choose from full- or part-time tracks. Those balancing work, family and enrollment are encouraged to take two courses each semester while students with no additional commitments may complete more than two courses per semester with approval. Part-time students typically complete the program in three years while full-time students can finish in about two years.

Online classes start twice a year (i.e. fall and spring) and follow a traditional 16-week schedule. Online students may elect to participate in on-campus classes, which are delivered once a week in three-hour sessions between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. While UNT Health welcomes students to campus, they are not required to visit the physical location.

Coursework and other activities

Online coursework is divided by week, and students must keep in pace with the weekly schedule. Class activities such as content review, discussion boards and written assignments often require going online to participate in the class multiple times each week. UNT Health recommends students prepare to spend 12-15 hours a week on each course. Students also have the ability to make changes as needed as the online program allows students to easily stop out for a term or two should work or life changes make it necessary.

UNT Health requires students to participate in four hours of co-curricular programming each 16-week session. Events include opportunities such as career preparation, cross-discipline collaboration and self-care programs. Activities are coordinated, and participation is tracked by the Office of Academic Services.

In addition, UNT Health encourages students to complete two hours of community service each month they are active in CPH classes. Faculty, staff and students in the College of Public Health regularly contribute their talents and skills to support solutions for a healthier community. Service work can be completed with current organization relationships or through opportunities in the D-FW area provided by the Office of Student and Academic Services. The associate dean for community engagement will send communications for reporting and tracking of any volunteer activities each term.

Practicum experience

Practicum experience is arranged by students and advised by graduate faculty. Students local to the D-FW area may take advantage of UNT Health relationships in the local community. Students in other locations will be coached on how to connect with potential practicum sites, to develop their project goals and to gain the most from their practicum experience. Practicum experiences is one year and include about 400 hours from conception to completion. However, students who have substantial prior professional experience that aligns with MPH competencies may apply for a waiver of up to 300 of these hours.

Practicum experience

MPH Online students must complete an intensive hands-on experience with local public health nonprofits, governmental institutions, health systems or other organizations based on their field passions and career goals. From this professional field experience, students gain a professional reference, interview discussion material and new confidence in their career path.

The practicum experience is arranged by students and advised by graduate faculty. Those local to the D-FW area may take advantage of UNT Health’s relationships with the local community. UNT Health faculty will coach students in other locations on how to connect with potential practicum sites, to develop their project goals and to gain the most from their practicum experience.
