• Fun Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Andrew Yockey

If you could work on any kind of research, what would it be?

“I do love studying all aspects of public health! I’m always curious why people engage in risky behaviors, how we can effectively model one’s behavior statistically and how we can inform harm reduction efforts. Moreover, public health is always a growing field, and I feel I am learning something new every day!

If I had to study something other than public health, I am a huge fan of music and music history. I used to play oboe for seven years and took part in several competitions (one of which, I received a score of “3,” which was one of the highest!). Every genre of music has its own style and unique characteristics that make it so attractive. I am also a huge fan of classical music and opera. I like these genres because each tells a story and I’m always interested in what the message of the piece is. Currently, I’m focusing on Gustav Mahler’s symphonies (he loathed chamber music) and learning more about Rossini’s opera, “Zelmira.”

• Pre-Award Updates

NSF Updates:

  • New Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) expected to become effective January 2023. Current PAPPG guide can be found here. fast
  • Goodbye FastLane Proposal Preparation…Hello Research.gov. FastLane will no longer be available as a grant proposal submission option effective January 2023. Principal investigators will be required to submit NSF proposals via Research.gov.
  • Upcoming revisions to NSF Biographical Sketch – in an effort to standardize the biosketches, investigators will be required to submit via SciENcv beginning in 2023.

GRAMS – Grant & Research Administration Management Suite

  • Effective immediately, GRAMS is now being used for IACUC, Grants and Agreements (contracts).
  • IRB and Research Conflict of Interest functions coming soon.
  • GRAMS will migrate data from the previous proposal software, Cayuse, and integrate the functions of Grants, Agreements, Conflict of Interest (COI), Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) into a single portal for principal investigators, reviewers and our division, which will improve routing and business processes and result in more efficient grant and contract submissions.

• ORS Team Highlights

Robyn began serving her two-year term as Secretary for the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) effective January 1, 2022.

Robyn attended the spring annual NCURA Financial Research Administration Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she presented a half-day workshop.

Katie and Keith attended an NCURA Traveling Workshop last December in Austin.

  • Katie attended an Auditor’s Guide to Research Administration program that focused on compliance requirements, best practices, reviewing internal controls and reducing risks for audits.
  • Keith attended the Contract Negotiation and Administration program that looked into the technical and complex issues associated with contract negotiation and management.

The ORS team wrapped up their study review of the NCURA publication Regulation and Compliance: A Compendium of Regulations and Certifications Applicable to Sponsored Programs.

Keith will be leading the technology team for the NCURA Region V (Texas/Oklahoma) meeting that will take place in Sugar Land, Texas, in November 2022.
