Researcher news: Dr. Eun-Young Mun receives five-year NIAAA Independent Scientist Award

Eun-Young Mun, PhD, Professor, Department of Health Behavior and Health Systems at the HSC School of Public Health, has received a five-year K02 Independent Scientist Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for her work titled, “Optimizing Brief Alcohol Interventions for Young Adults via Computational Methods.”

This K02 career development grant is awarded to independent scientists with current peer-reviewed R01 funding, supporting up to five years of compensation for a period of intensive research focus to enhance their careers in public health and health-related areas. The aim of the grant is to prepare a generation of veterans in these fields to combat the growing challenges affecting human health as a whole. In the last 10 years, NIAAA has supported four to six investigators annually.

Dr. Mun’s research broadly focuses on providing evidence-based recommendations to major stakeholders for reducing alcohol misuse among young adults. She has achieved this by compiling data from brief alcohol intervention studies and innovatively analyzing them.

She joined the HSC School of Public Health faculty in 2018 and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) of an ongoing NIAAA-supported R01 project called “Project INTEGRATE” since 2010. Project INTEGRATE is widely recognized for its transformative influence on the way that researchers understand and evaluate the evidence of personalized feedback interventions for college student drinking.

During her career, Dr. Mun has led pioneering studies recognizing and addressing methodological gaps for important real-life questions. In the process, she has supported PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, serving as mentor and guide, often bringing them into NIH studies with far-reaching implications and a path toward future research careers in both academia and industry.

If you could work on any kind of research what would it be?

This is a really tough question for me to answer! I’m thankful every day that I get to do public health research because I love people, but also because the work we do is so applied. I absolutely adore the work that I do currently about sexual health, STI screening and implementation science. One of my favorite projects that I’ve worked on is how people communicate sexual consent to their partners– it was super interesting to understand the specifics of how messages are communicated verbally and non-verbally. I’d definitely continue with what I do now, just on a larger scale so it could influence policies around sexual health and impact communities. Hopefully that’s where my career is headed!

If I had to choose something outside of the realm of public health, I’d work on something related to anthrozoology – the interaction between people and animals. I’ve always been fascinated by animals, and I wanted to be both a marine biologist and a veterinarian when I was a kid. At first, I was really interested in how dolphins communicate with each other and learn to communicate with people – now I’m interested in how pets, particularly dogs, learn and communicate with us. There’s an Instagram page I’ve been watching about a dog named Bunny who communicates with her owners by pressing buttons that say words. For example, if Bunny wants to go outside, she presses the button that says outside. Lately, she’s gotten additional buttons and has been learning to communicate about time (morning, afternoon, night) and has been asking existential questions (“Why Bunny Dog?”). It’s truly incredible – but for now, I think I’ll stick to public health!

When working on a NIH biosketch, remember to use the new biosketch format located here https://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms/biosketch.htm.   Instructions and samples are available on the website and ORS can assist in reviewing your biosketch. 

For NIH biosketches, NIH does not require a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or a PMID (PubMed reference number) in each citation.  However, NIH does require a PMCID number when citing articles that fall under the Public Access Policy (also see NIH biosketch FAQ’s for more info).  Remember to include applicable PubMed central reference numbers (e.g. PMCID: PMC1234567) for citations in your NIH biosketches.  The same also applies to your citations in the bibliography and reference document for any citations that include key personnel on the proposal.  Regarding citation format, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is a good rule of thumb to use.

Looking for another way to cite an article from PubMed?  Search the article title of your citation and if it appears in search, look to the right on your screen for a “Cite” button.  The Cite button makes it easy to retrieve styled citations that you can copy and paste into a document, or download an .nbib file to use with your reference manager software. If you need a “how-to” demonstration of this process, please contact ORS@unthsc.edu.

Using the Cite button for an item will open a pop-up window where you can copy the citation formatted in four popular styles: AMA (American Medical Association), MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association), or NLM (National Library of Medicine). You can also download the citation as an .nbib file, which most bibliographic reference management software can import.  See the PubMed Help page for more details.

In May, Katie graduated National Council of University Research Administrators Region V (Texas/Oklahoma) Mustang Mentoring Program.  Her capstone project was entitled  “Preparing for long-term compliance after project closeout and with personnel turnover.”

Keith is leading the technology team for the NCURA Region V (Texas/Oklahoma) meeting that will take place in Fort Worth in November 2021.
