50 Heroes: Dr. Patricia Gwirtz

Associate Dean in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Gwirtz pours her heart into the Medical Sciences Program.

Her dedication and intelligence are a big reason why the one-year Master of Science program is considered one of the best in the nation at preparing students to succeed in medical school or another health professional school.

A thought leader in active learning, she challenges students to develop emotional intelligence and critical-thinking skills. As an advisor, she invests in her students’ potential and will spend a weekend writing hundreds of recommendation letters for students who earn them.

As one former student put it, “Dr. Gwirtz never failed to challenge me emotionally and intellectually. She is a hero to her students, her peers, and to the thousands of UNTHSC alumni who reached their potential because of her continuous investment.”
