Interprofessional Education and Practice Faculty Development: Certificates of Recognition and Distinction

Session Dates: Thursdays, Feb 21, March 21, April 25, May 23, June 6

 

IPEP Certificate Overview:

There will be five 1.5-hour interactive sessions held at UNTHSC from 12:00 to 1:30pm (lunch provided). Pre-work for each in-person session will include no more than 2 hours of preparation via online learning modules. Topics are listed below.

IPEP Distinction Overview:

An IPEP Faculty Distinction will be offered to faculty who have completed the IPE Faculty Development Certificate of Recognition requirements and who partner with at least one other faculty member from a different profession to design, develop, implement and assess outcomes of an approved interprofessional learning experience with students or trainees of two or more professions.  An additional requirement is the IPEP PSA. Faculty seeking the IPE Faculty Distinction will demonstrate additional scholarship by sharing the outcomes of their IPE at professional conferences or through publication of an educational research article.

Session One: Practical Interprofessional Teamwork, Feb. 21, 2019

Interactive In-Person Session One (1.5 Hours 12 noon-1:30 PM, Lunch Provided)

Introduction: Utilizing a series of low-level, inclusive simulations, interprofessional teams of faculty will learn and apply teamwork strategies and tools that promote positive outcomes in a variety of practice settings.

Online Pre-Work: 

  • IPE Module 1: What is Interprofessional Practice and Education? (45 Minutes)
  • IHI (Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School) Module PS 101: Introduction to Patient Safety – 3 Lessons (1 Hour 30 Minutes)
  • Outside Team Project: Interprofessional teams of faculty (3-4 members) will work together to create an innovative 30-60 second public service announcement to promote Interprofessional Education and Practice to faculty and students. The video will offer a Call to Acton for students and faculty around interprofessional collaboration. The videos should address the 5 W’s: Who, What, When, Where and Why of collaborative practice. An instructional videographer with the UNTHSC Center for Innovative Learning meets with your team to consult on script development and video design. Teams will schedule a video session with the videographer to complete their video project. Videos will be premiered on the IPE Department website as well as through other available UNTHSC media. DUE MAY 31, 2019 (Completion time varies).

Face to Face Session Objectives: Interprofessional Faculty Teams will:

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of dynamic interprofessional collaborative teamwork
  1. Leadership communication, situation monitoring, and mutual support tools and strategies will be utilized to improve team performance across four teamwork simulations.

Session Two: IPEscape Room Adventure, March 21, 2019

Interactive In-Person Session Two: IPEP Escape Room Adventure, March 21 (1.5 Hours 12 noon-1:30 PM, Lunch Provided)

Introduction: Interprofessional teams of faculty (3-4 members) will demonstrate effective teamwork strategies, working together to follow clues and solve puzzles to complete an escape room activity within a set time limit.  Faculty will have an opportunity in this event to demonstrate that they know how and can show how to apply the knowledge related to interprofessional teams and teamwork and health care safety gained through participation in the in session one and two online modules.

Online Pre-Work:

  • IHI (Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School) Module PS 104: Teamwork and Communication in a Culture of Safety3 Lessons (1 Hour 15 Minutes)

Face to Face Session Objectives:  Interprofessional Faculty Teams will:

  1. Solve clues and puzzles related to interprofessional education and practice and patient safety.
  2. Apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of collaborative IPEP to solve an IPEP escape room within a set time limit.

Session Three: Game of Roles! (and Responsibilities), April 25, 2019

Interactive In-Person Session Three: (1.5 Hours 12 noon-1:30 PM, Lunch Provided)

Introduction: Faculty will expand on content within the pre-work modules to build a culture of value toward professional contributions to health outcomes and public health by learning more about each faculty from other professions. Interprofessional teams will play the Game of Roles to stimulate learning, questioning, and reflecting.

Online Pre-Work:

  • IPE Module 2: Interprofessional Team Member Roles and Responsibilities (1 Hour)
  • IHI (Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School) Module GME 205:  A Roadmap for Facilitating Experiential Learning in Quality Improvement – 1 Module (1 Hour)

Face to Face Session Objectives:  Interprofessional Faculty Team Members will:

  1. Develop a foundation of mutual respect and collaboration as faculty learn from each other by sharing roles and responsibilities of their health professions and seeking clarity about the roles and responsibilities of their interprofessional colleagues.

Session Four: Effective IPE Team Facilitation Strategies Improv, May 23, 2019

Interactive In-Person Session Three: (1.5 Hours 12 noon-1:30 PM, Lunch Provided)

Introduction:
Faculty are paired in interprofessional teams of 3 members for this interactive session. Each faculty member will have ten minutes to model two strategies for effective Interprofessional team facilitation.  The presenting faculty member will not reveal to the team which strategies they are demonstrating (Facilitation Strategies are provided in IPE Module 3: Faculty Facilitation Skills for Interprofessional Education and Practice identifies the characteristics and strategies of effective IPE facilitation).  Faculty may choose to facilitate segments of existing IPE workshops or utilize other scenarios including clinical setting scenarios through which to demonstrate their selected facilitation characteristics.  Teams will conduct a five minute debrief after each presentation, to allow team members to identify the particular characteristics modeled and to allow peer feedback on the demonstrated facilitation.  Presenting faculty will provide feedback to the team on their perceived strengths and weaknesses in facilitation and seek feedback from their peers on strategies for improved team facilitation. This session consists of online pre-work modules and 1 one hour in-person session.  Online pre-work modules are completed before the in-person session

  • IPE Module 3: Faculty Facilitation Skills for Interprofessional Education and Practice (1 Hour)

Face to Face Session Objectives:  Interprofessional Faculty Team Members will:

  1. Model two effective facilitation strategies through an interprofessional team scenario.
  2. Give and receive feedback on interprofessional team facilitation strategies.

Session Five: Celebration & Integrating Collaborative Practice into Existing Courses and Clinical Experiences, June 6, 2019

Interactive In-Person Session One June 6 (1.5 Hours 12 noon-1:30 PM, Lunch Provided)

Introduction:
Session 5 will begin with a celebration of faculty accomplishments in the completion of sessions 1-4 and presentation of the IPE Faculty Development Certificate of Recognition.  Faculty proceeding to completion of the IPE Faculty Distinction program will have an opportunity to present their Public Service Announcements and IPE distinction project and receive feedback.

  • IPE Module 4: Incorporating Interprofessional Education and Practice into Your Course (1 Hour)
  • IHI (Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School) Module TA 101 Introduction to the Triple Aim for Populations – 3 Lessons (2 Hours)

Face to Face Session Objectives:  Interprofessional Faculty Teams will:

  1. Celebrate accomplishments and give feedback on PSA videos and projects
  2. Present and receive feedback on the IPEP PSA videos (Distinction faculty teams only).
  3. Share their IPEP distinction project and receive feedback (Distinction faculty only.).
