UNTHSC appoints new Social & Behavioral Chair

The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (UNTHSC) has appointed Dennis L. Thombs, PhD, FAAHB, as the new chair for Social and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Public Health.
Dr. Thombs joins UNTHSC from the Department of Behavioral Science and Community Health, College of Public Health and Health Professions, J. Hillis Miller Health Science Center, at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he most recently served as associate professor and coordinator of MPH-Social and Behavioral Science Concentration.
During his career, he has also taught at Kent State University, the State University of New York at Brockport and the University of Maryland.
He is immediate past president of the American Academy of Health Behavior, where he has been named a Fellow (FAAHB). He serves on the NIH scientific review group: Risk, Prevention and Health Behavior across the Lifespan. Dr. Thombs is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Health Behavior; is consulting editor for Journal of American College Health; and is a regular reviewer for Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs and a number of other journals. He has been honored with a Faculty Research Award from the University of Florida and Faculty Mentorship Award from the Kent State University Graduate Student Senate.
The focus of Dr. Thombs’ scholarship is addictive behavior with a special interest in alcohol and drug use during the period of emerging adulthood. He is the author or co-author of more than 70 peer-reviewed papers in national and international journals. In addition, he is the author of Introduction to Addictive Behaviors, published by The Guilford Press, which is now in its third edition. His research has been supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the U.S. Department of Education.
Dr. Thombs holds a PhD in Health Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ed.S. in Community/Mental Health Counseling, his master’s and his bachelor’s all from the University of South Florida, Tampa.
