National alcohol researcher joins faculty at UNT Health Science Center

Scott T. Walters, PhD, has joined the School of Public Health at the UNT Health Science Center (UNTHSC) as professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Walters, who holds his PhD in clinical psychology, is the author/co-author of four books, 50 journal articles, and more than 100 conference papers, posters and presentations on social and behavioral issues. His work centers on motivational interviewing and other brief approaches to help people make changes in substance abuse and other problem behaviors.
He is currently principal or co-investigator on four National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants testing in-person versus computer interventions to increase probation compliance; Web delivery of psychosocial treatment for substance abuse disorders; and initiation of colon cancer screening in veterans. He also serves as a consultant on four additional NIH grants.
Dr. Walters has served as editorial reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed publications, including Addiction, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs,Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. He has conducted numerous trainings around the country for criminal justice workers, counselors and healthcare professionals, and has served as a consultant to various universities, government/nonprofit systems and other organizations. As an extension of his research, he has helped to create a number of health education products, including online programs for college drinkers that are site licensed by more than 550 colleges internationally. As a result of his work to bridge research and practice, he received the 2006 University of Cincinnati Award from the American Probation and Parole Association.
He joins UNTHSC from the University of Texas School of Public Health, where he served as associate professor of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences and chair of the School of Public Health faculty. He also served as adjunct associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Walters has previously taught at the University of New Mexico and San Diego State University.
Dr. Walters received his PhD with distinction from the University of New Mexico and completed his clinical internship at the Boston Consortium in Clinical Psychology, VA Boston Healthcare System, Harvard University and Boston University Schools of Medicine.
