An ‘unexpected honor’ for pharmacy student

Being appointed as student regent for the UNT System Board of Regents came as an unexpected honor for Haley Leverett.

The UNT System College of Pharmacy student is one of 10 regents from schools throughout the state who have been appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to serve a year-long term beginning June 1.

Leverett, who is from North Richland Hills, said she applied for the position at the encouragement of a friend, but never expected to be appointed to the board. When she received a letter from the UNT System telling her that her application had been forwarded to Gov. Abbott’s office, it got real and the nerves set in, she said.

“I am humbled to have been chosen for this position and realize the great responsibility that it holds,” she said. “Through this position I hope to be someone that can unite the students across three campuses.”

Leverett, who attended the University of North Texas in Denton, said that having attended two of the three campuses in the UNT system will give her a unique perspective in her new role. Being a student regent is a great responsibility, she said, and she looks forward to making a difference.

Student regents attend the meetings of the university’s board of regents, but are not in a voting position.
