President Michael R. Williams: AAUATUNTHSC must deliver extraordinary value
Armed with examples of successful research, patient care and educational initiatives, UNT Health Science Center President Michael R. Williams told a group of business leaders that he wants his institution to be “one of the top assets not only in Fort Worth, but in all of Texas.”
“We’ll get there by delivering remarkable value to our customers,” said Dr. Williams, DO, MD, MBA, at an on-campus Fort Worth Chamber luncheon Thursday. “UNT Health Science Center is about the solutions we create for our community.”
Dr. Williams, the first alumnus to lead the Health Science Center, told the Chamber crowd he wanted to explain “who we are and what we do.” The audience learned about a blood-based screening for Alzheimer’s disease being developed by Sid O’Bryant, PhD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, and groundbreaking cancer research involving biocompatible nanoparticles from the laboratory of Andras Lacko, PhD, Professor of Molecular Biology and Immunology.
Dr. Williams also shared the story of high school basketball player Kylie Ducat, who visited a dozen doctors who couldn’t explain her debilitating chest pain. The 13th physician, Albert Yurvati, DO (TCOM ’86), Chairman of Surgery, discovered an injury to her sternum and performed successful surgery.
The one thing that stands the test of time, the one thing that sustains an organization and its mission, is the value it provides,” Dr. Williams said. “Extraordinary, remarkable value: the kind people talk about, the kind they can’t get enough of. This is the kind of experience by which we will be defined.”
