HSC named the winner of the D Magazines 2022 Achievement in Medical Research Award
The extensive research done by Dr. Sid O’Bryant and his team at the Institute of Translational Research has earned the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth the 2022 Medical Research Award by D Magazine. Dr. O’Bryant, the executive director of the ITR and a professor at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, received the honor on behalf of HSC as part of D Magazine’s 2022 Excellence in Healthcare Awards.
“This is a tremendous honor to receive this award on behalf of HSC,” said Dr. O’Bryant. “This is a tribute to our team at the ITR and the amazing work they have done on so many levels. I’m proud to receive this recognition from D Magazine and it’s a testament to our research.”
This past year, the ITR has received two landmark grants from the National Institutes of Health. On Oct. 3, it was announced that ITR was awarded a five-year, $148.78 million grant to conduct the first-ever large-scale study of the biology of Alzheimer’s disease within a health disparities framework across the three largest racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. — Black, Hispanic and non-Hispanic white.
Six weeks later, the ITR was the recipient of a five-year, $1.42 million grant from the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, to study the use of retinal imaging for screening early changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition to the grants, findings from a recent study by the team at the ITR were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The article, “Characterization of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia among Community-Dwelling Mexican Americans and Non-Hispanic Whites,” was published in the November issue of the journal.
D Magazine recognized many individuals and organizations throughout the North Texas region for their work in the health care field. This year’s program attracted more than 100 nominations across several categories, and the winners were chosen by D Magazine’s editorial team and outside judges with a deep knowledge of the health care field.
HSC was also a finalist in the Outstanding Healthcare Collaboration category. All of the finalists and winners will be featured in D CEO’s December issue.
