UNT Health Science Center DNA expert named HealthCare Hero

Arthur Eisenberg, Ph.D., was named a 2008 HealthCare Hero by the Fort Worth Business Press. Dr. Eisenberg serves as the director of the UNT Center for Human Identification DNA identity lab, located at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth’s medical school and more.

Dr. Eisenberg heads a team of researchers and analysts who analyze DNA samples from unidentified remains and family members of those who are missing in the hopes that matches will identify the individuals. He continually works to not only improve the technology used in the lab to make the identification process quicker and more precise, but Dr. Eisenberg also devotes personal time to the families who are missing loved ones to guide them through the identification process.

Dr. Eisenberg is a member of the FBI’s Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methodologies, the American Academy of Forensic Science, the American Association of Blood Banks and the College of American Pathologists.

The lab’s work has led to the identification of more than 130 people and has led to criminal convictions, in many cases.

The DNA identity lab contributes samples to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) national missing person database and is the only academic center to do so.
