UNT Health Science Center announces administration appointments

The University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worthâ??s medical school and more, recently announced new appointments to its administrative staff.

Thomas Yorio is now executive vice president of academic affairs and research. Yorio joined the Health Science Center in 1977. He received his doctorate in pharmacology from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Herbert H. Lehman College.

Jamboor Vishwanatha has been appointed dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He started at the Health Science Center in 2004. He earned his doctorate in biology from the University of South Carolina, and both Master and Bachelor of Science degrees in genetics from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India.

Randall Jones recently was named president and chief executive officer of UNT Health. Jones joined the Health Science Center in 2000.

M. Christine Kalish has been named vice president and chief of staff. Kalish has been with the Health Science Center since 2004. She earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Texas Christian Universityâ??s M.J. Neeley School of Business and a Bachelor of Science degree in health services administration from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Jean Tips has been promoted to vice president of the Department of Marketing and Communications. A graduate of the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism with a Bachelor of Science, Tips joined the Health Science Center in 2005.

Rand Horsman has been promoted to associate vice president of Human Resources. Horsman has been at the Health Science Center since 1987. He has a Bachelor of Business Arts degree from Texas A&I University and a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Texas Christian University.

Sanjay Awasthi is the Health Science Centerâ??s new associate vice president of clinical research. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Southwestern and a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry from University of Texas at Austin. He comes to the Health Science Center from University of Texas at Arlington, where he taught general chemistry and enzymology.

Michael Mueller, who started at the Health Science Center in 2006, has been promoted to assistant vice president for finance and chief budget officer. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in international business and economics from Sam Houston State University and is pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from Texas Christian University.

Stephen Barrett has been named assistant vice president of facilities management. Barrett joined the Health Science Center staff in 1999. He received a Bachelor of Science in construction technology from Texas State University â?? San Marcos and is currently working on an Executive Master of Business Administration degree at Texas Christian University.

Elwyn Grimes has been named chief of obstetrics and gynecology at John Peter Smith Hospital and a professor on the Health Science Center faculty. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Jackson State University, and his Doctor of Medicine degree is from Meharry Medical College.

Laurel Slezak, C.P.A., who started with the University of North Texas System in 2005, is the new director of the Health Science Centerâ??s Department of Internal Audit. Slezak holds a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and accounting from DePaul University and attended graduate school at Northern Illinois University.
