Two new Discovery Centers will debut at UNTHSC

Two new Discovery Centers will kick off with Open Houses June 25, at 10 a.m.-noon (Center for BioHealth) and at 2 – 4 p.m. (Research Education Building).

The Discovery Centers are an open innovation initiative to provide shared laboratory space for young researchers and clinical faculty intent on developing new products and scientific processes. The labs will supply instrumentation for researchers who don’t have access to critical capabilities. The Discovery Centers will be available to entrepreneurs and start-up companies enrolled in the UNT Health Science Center’s commercialization program, allowing students, faculty and entrepreneurs to work side by side on new research and discoveries.

Each Discovery Center is equipped with a unique set of capabilities. The laboratory in the Center for BioHealth has molecular diagnostic abilities including a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) cabinet and quantitative PCR system, digital microscopic imaging, HPLC, lyophilization and tissue culture capabilities.

The laboratory in the Research and Education building includes protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis, phase contrast microscopy, centrifugation and high throughput plate-based assay detection with a plate reader and 96-well plate washer. Both Discovery Centers also have more than 100 square feet of bench space, fume hoods and biosafety cabinets.

The Discovery Centers result from collaborative efforts by the UNTHSC Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy and the Division of Research & Innovation.
