TCOM offers new international rotation option

The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine will begin offering a registered elective rotation in Lilongwe, Malawi, to fourth-year students in 2011. There will be two opportunities for students to spend a four-week rotation in the east-central African country, which will expose students to more on-the-job training opportunities.

"As the American population becomes more multi-cultural, we have increasing numbers of patients from all ethnic backgrounds," John Podgore, professor of pediatrics, said. "By participating in the Malawi rotations, students can get a better insight into their patient population."

The students will be working closely with licensed physicians and will have independent responsibilities according to their abilities. Various single or combination rotations are available including general medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery and emergency medicine. These can be arranged during orientation or students can make their selection in advance.

Visas will be issued gratis for three months to current US passport holders. Housing will be provided at the Daeyang Luke Medical Center’s nursing school dormitory.

The first rotation will be Jan. 3 – 28, and the second will be Jan. 31 – Feb. 25. Students interested in applying should contact Ann Drake at 817-735-2426 or Linda Rider at 817-735-0349 by Oct. 30.
