School of Public Health offers graduate certificate programs

Two new courses of study in the School of Public Health offer fast, convenient paths to broader career advancement opportunities in the public health fields:

  • Graduate Certificate Program in Public Health – This fall, 26 new students are enrolled.The Graduate Certificate can be completed with just five classes – the online courses designed in an accelerated, eight-week format, and enrollment opportunities are now offered in fall, spring and summer sessions throughout the year. Students learn the foundations of public health in the areas of health management and policy, environmental health, biostatistics, epidemiology and community health.

  • Public Health Graduate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – This program covers mapping, research and spatial analysis, which can be added to either the Master of Public Health (MPH) or Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree plan.GIS is a valuable tool in public health today to better understand the geography of disease and its risk factors, and the role of GIS is rapidly expanding in the development of public health policy for targeted prevention and intervention methods. GIS technology is now used by the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state and local health departments and various other public health organizations.

    In conjunction with the University of North Texas’ (UNT) Department of Geography, the new UNTHSC 15-credit-hour certificate program is designed to train students for public health research and practice in an academic or industry setting using GIS.
