Health Science Center Welcomes New Students at Annual White Coat Ceremony

The UNT Health Science Center faculty and staff will formally welcome 2006-2007 entering students at its Convocation and White Coat Ceremony Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.

The ceremony will take place at Will Rogers Auditorium. This yearâ??s guest speaker is Scott Ransom, DO, MBA, MPH, new president of the health science center.

A reception will follow the White Coat Ceremony on the health science center campus in the Atrium.

The White Coat Ceremony is a rite of passage for students entering the academic health community. During the ceremony, new medical, physician assistant, biomedical sciences and public health students are literally â??coatedâ? for the first time. The white coat they receive symbolizes the humanitarianism and integrity required of each individual entering a health-related profession. Students will also receive gifts signifying their entry into their respective professions.

This yearâ??s ceremony will include the largest group of students in the history of UNT Health Science Center: 167 incoming students from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, 107 incoming students from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, 107 new students from the School of Public Health and 32 new students from the Physician Assistant Studies Program.

Supporters of the Convocation and White Coat ceremony include the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant Studies, the School of Public Health and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
