Ghorpade named Chair of Cell Biology and Anatomy

Anuja Ghorpade, PhD and professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the UNT Health Science Center, was recently appointed chair of the department, effective Jan. 1.

Ghorpade joined the Health Science Center in December 2007 to establish a new research program in HIV/AIDS, glial biology and a Brain Bank for neurodegeneration research. As a leading researcher of HIV-related dementia, Ghorpade and her team investigate the responses of astrocytes to HIV and inflammation and the effects of neurodegeneration. They also compare brain tissues from patients affected with the disease to unaffected ones.

Ghorpade earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Bombay, a Master of Science from M S University of Baroda and continued her education at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Life Sciences. Prior to the Health Science Center, Ghorpade successfully established an independent research program and a Brain Bank at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
