Dr. Patricia Gwirtz named Associate Dean of GSBS

Patricia Gwirtz, PhD, who is known for both her cardiovascular physiology research and her dedication to helping students achieve their goals, has been named Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

In October, Dr. Gwirtz will mark 32 years at UNT Health Science Center. She is a Professor of Integrative Physiology and Anatomy and has been serving as Assistant Dean for the Specialized Masters Programs for Medical Science and Clinical Research Management.

The success the Specialized Masters Programs have had in helping students achieve their goals of admission to medical, dental and physician assistant programs across the country are a source of pride for Dr. Gwirtz.

“I am committed to mentoring students and junior faculty and to finding innovative ways to incorporate active learning methods in the classroom,” she said.

As a researcher, she has been most proud of her work in cardiovascular physiology that led to her election as a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology. Her research has included the beneficial effects of endurance exercise training on the heart and coronary circulation.

Dr. Gwirtz received her PhD in physiology from Thomas Jefferson University and her Bachelors of Science degree in Nutrition Science from Drexel University.
