Albert Yurvati awarded Orel F. Martin Medal
Albert Yurvati, DO (TCOM ’86), is the 2013 recipient of the Orel F. Martin Medal, the highest honor awarded annually by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS).
Yurvati, Chair and Professor of Surgery at UNT Health Science Center, was honored for his considerable contributions to ACOS, the field of surgery and the osteopathic profession, and for his excellence in surgical care and education and his achievements in medical research.
“The college is proud of Dr. Yurvati’s accomplishments,” said Don Peska, DO, Dean of UNTHSC’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. “He has been a wonderful ambassador for the Health Science Center and a model for our students and residents.”
Orel F. Martin was the first secretary-treasurer of the ACOS, and was the recipient when the award first was bestowed in 1956.
“He was an educator, organizer, negotiator, conciliator and a mentor,” Yurvati said. “These are the attributes I will continue to exhibit in my professional and personal life.”
Yurvati has received numerous awards from the UNT Health Science Center, most recently including the 2012 Clyde Gallenhugh DO Memorial Award and the 2011 President’s Award for Clinical Excellence.
His research interests include the inflammatory effects of cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac metabolism, mechanical cardiac assist devices, and post-cardiac surgery adhesions.
He is Past President of the Metro Fort Worth American Heart Association (AHA) and is a past board member of the Texas Affiliate of the AHA. He also received the AHA Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Yurvati has published more than 51 peer-reviewed articles, three book chapters and numerous abstracts. He is a primary investigator in multiple Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials and has lectured nationally and internationally.
