The University of North Texas Health Science Center’s Project INTEGRATE, was recently named as one of 20 finalists in the DataWorks! Challenge for the team’s work in alcohol misuse prevention. This challenge is produced by HeroX, a crowdsourcing innovation platform with a global partner network. The goal of competitors in the DataWorks! Challenge is to show how they reused shared data to further their biological and/or biomedical research efforts.

The winners will be awarded a total of $500,000 from the National Institutes of Health to continue their work.

Team members of Project INTEGRATE submitted a solution based on its study centered around developing a better understanding of why adolescents and young adults — including college students — misuse alcohol and finding ways to help them drink less.

To develop their solution, the team utilized the most granular data from existing intervention studies to determine how interventions work, for whom and to make suggestions for developing better interventions in the future to help stakeholders make evidence-based decisions. Throughout this study, the team also developed new approaches to data integration, harmonization and synthesis to better describe the story the data is telling.

To win the DataWorks! Challenge, Project INTEGRATE needs to collect as many votes as possible by Dec. 21.

Finalists for this challenge are eligible to receive awards from DataWorks! including:

• Up to $500,000 across 12 awards
• Up to two people’s choice recognition awards are determined by crowd-sourced voting.
