TCOM’s Department of Pediatrics, JPS Health Network hosting Fifth Annual Ralph L. Anderson, MD Women’s Health Symposium

Ralph AndersonHonoring an inspiring legacy, The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is partnering with the JPS Health Network for the Fifth Annual Ralph J. Anderson, MD Women’s Health Symposium. The symposium will be in person at the Amon Carter Center at Lena Pope at 8 a.m. on Friday, September 16.

The symposium, hosted by HSC, will feature speakers from HSC, JPS, UT-Southwestern and HCA Medical City. A diverse set of topics will be covered, including advances in newborn care, breastfeeding, adolescent health care, urinary incontinence, palliative medicine, fetal surgery innovations, human trafficking and substance abuse disorders. Thanks to financial support from TCOM’s Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health and JPS, the registration fee has been reduced to only $95 this year.

“The Ralph J Anderson, MD Women’s Health Symposium is an important annual event that brings us together to learn of advances in women’s health through an array of topics on how to better care for women in our communities and clinics,” said Dr. Priya Bui, chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health at TCOM. “It is a legacy of a man who was an inspiring physician, educator and leader.”

The 5th Annual Ralph J. Anderson, MD Women’s Health Symposium was created to honor Dr. Ralph L. Anderson following his death in 2017. Anderson dedicated a large portion of his career to the education of health care professionals in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The legacy of Anderson and his impact continues to grow each year.

For more than 20 years, Anderson developed, moderated and oversaw a yearly large educational symposium to ensure that practicing health care professionals continued their education to improve patient care and outcomes. In September of 2005, Dr. Anderson was appointed as the chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at HSC.

Prior to this, he served in leadership positions at the University of Western Ontario and Texas Tech University.

Anderson devoted his career to improving women’s health through clinical care, medical education, research and local, state and national advocacy for women’s health. He envisioned and created opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration to improve the health and well-being of women and their families. He passed away on July 31, 2017.

This year’s symposium will showcase the advances made in women’s health care in both Tarrant and Dallas Counties.

There will be 7.25 hours of continuing education credit available for physicians (both AMA/PRA Category 1 and AOA Category 1-A), PA’s, NP’s, certified nurse midwives, nurses, social workers and public health professionals and will include ethics and professional development credit.
