First TCOM alums accepted into prestigious pediatric cancer fellowship

Two 2016 UNT Health Science Center graduates will begin prestigious pediatric cancer fellowships this summer in Dallas.
Morgan Coleman, DO, and Chelsee Greer, DO, are the first Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) alumni to earn fellowships in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center/Children’s Health.
“We are proud of Dr. Greer and Dr. Coleman for earning this extraordinary opportunity to continue their training in pediatric hematology oncology,” said W. Paul Bowman, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at UNTHSC. “These TCOM graduates are perfect examples of the many talented providers of the future who leave the Health Science Center prepared to transform the lives of others.”
Dr. Greer, a third-year pediatric resident at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas, said her fellowship begins in July and will last three years, possibly longer depending on her research project. The fellowship offers an extraordinary combination of clinical and research experience, she said.
She credited the education and training she received at TCOM for preparing her to succeed in residency and earn the fellowship.
“I believe what sets TCOM apart from other schools is that we are really trained to listen and talk to patients,” Dr. Greer said. “On my first day of residency, I was absolutely prepared to sit down and interact with patients and their families. It is so very important.”
Dr. Coleman is completing her residency in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She was drawn to pediatric hematology because it requires meticulous medical management of complicated diseases, as well as empathetic caring for children and their families.
Dr. Coleman and Dr. Greer said they were excited that their performance in the fellowship could open more pathways into the program for future TCOM graduates.
“With a strong education, engaging rotations and inspiring mentors, TCOM helped build a foundation that allowed me to pursue my dream of being a pediatric hematologist and oncologist,” Dr. Coleman said.
