The nonprofit Cowtown Cruisin’ for a Cure has honored Andras Lacko, PhD, for his dedication to the fight against prostate cancer by presenting him with its Classic Heroes Award of Gratitude.

The award, presented Sept. 11 at the Moncrief Cancer Institute, is a way to thank Dr. Lacko for all he has done to advance the treatment of prostate cancer, said Terry Mann, President of Cowtown Cruisin’ for a Cure.

"Dr. Lacko is one of our star fighters against this disease, and it’s a joy to honor such an inspiring, knowledgeable man of his caliber," he said. "If there is going to be a breakthrough in the fight against prostate cancer, then it would not surprise me a bit if it came through UNT Health Science Center."

Dr. Lacko said he is the one who is grateful.

"This award is certainly a great privilege coming from an organization that has devoted itself to prostate cancer awareness and finding a cure," said Dr. Lacko, Professor of Integrative Physiology and Anatomy. "I’m very proud to be associated with this effort."

The organization has consistently supported Dr. Lacko’s work for years, donating more than $100,000 to support UNT Health Science Center research.

Dr. Lacko’s research focuses on the use of nanoparticles to deliver anti-cancer drugs directly to tumors while avoiding damage to healthy cells. This approach could spare cancer patients from experiencing the hair loss, nausea and other effects of chemotherapy.

Such research fits right in line with what Cowtown Cruisin’ for a Cure organizers had in mind in 2002 when the first vintage car show, fundraiser and cancer screening was held.

"What we are trying to do is increase awareness of prostate cancer," Mann said. "And Dr. Lacko has helped us so much to do that."
