UNTHSC is committed to a culture of collaborative Interprofessional Practice. We believe that the needs of patients and communities can be better met by the use of collaborative health care teams. It is key that Academic Health Science Centers and the practice community work together to demonstrate effective models of health care collaboration. The UNTHSC Department of Interprofessional Education and Practice in collaboration with the UNTHSC Department of Professional and Continuing Education are working to provide continuing education in collaborative practice skills and effective collaboration models in venues that provide opportunities for Interprofessional colleagues to learn about, from and with each other.
The World Health Organization identifies that “interprofessional collaboration in education and practice is an innovative strategy in mitigating the global health crisis… Collaborative practice occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, care givers, and communities to deliver the highest quality of care.”
In 2013, UNTHSC, the Health Industry Council Foundation of North Texas, the Department of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), and partnering institutions initiated an annual Interprofessional Practice Symposium. This annual symposium attracts a wide range of health professions educators and practitioners and highlights collaborative practice models and competency development. Join health professionals from across Texas in an effort to discover innovative approaches toward the IHI’s Triple Aim Initiative and patient safety.
