Media Quick Start

The Division of Academic Innovation provides multiple options for video creation. After reviewing the information below, contact canvas@unthsc@edu for additional assistance.

DIY Office Options

Canvas Studio

The Canvas Studio tool is now available to all HSC Canvas users. Canvas Studio provides video recording and storage all within the Canvas LMS. In addition, it is integrated with the Verbit captioning service to provide human-checked, ADA compliant captioning. The most current guides for Canvas Studio are available through the  Canvas/Instructure Canvas Studio guides.

An additional advantage of Canvas Studio is that you can add frequently used YouTube or Vimeo videos to your Canvas Studio library. If you have .mp4 videos created elsewhere, these can be uploaded to Canvas Studio as well.

Available in June 2024: You also have the option to have your Zoom recordings automatically sent to your Canvas Studio library. To connect your HSC Zoom to Canvas Studio, follow the steps in this guide. Please note: If a Zoom recording includes student interaction in any format that identifies the student (face, name, voice), it can only be posted in the relevant course for that semester. To post the video in a course in which the students are not registered OR the semester following breaks FERPA regulations.

Mediasite Capture

Mediasite Mosaic, a desktop application for recording videos, has also been used for recording videos. Recently, Mediasite created Mediasite Capture, which provides the same recording features as Mediasite Mosaic, but through the web browser, thereby negating the need to download the Mediasite Mosaic application. Videos created through Capture are automatically uploaded to Mediasite. See the Getting started with Mediasite Capture document to record with Capture.

DIY Options available in the DAI (4th floor library)

Rapidmooc

Introducing Rapidmooc, a portable DIY video recording studio designed for producing high-quality, professional videos. The Rapidmooc is accessible for booking through EMS during library hours. The Rapidmooc features a user-friendly built-in touch screen, comprehensive tutorials, and on-hand personnel to ensure your video creation process is seamless. With its rapid turnaround time, it’s the ideal solution for quickly generating videos. Once recording is complete, your video is instantly ready for use.

Learning Glass

Our Learning Glass space is perfect for those who prefer to write out their notes and information on a dry erase board while they lecture! The learning glass functions as a black lit, clear pane of glass between you and the camera that you can write directly on to. So, any viewers can follow along with your notes, graphs, data, etc.! A high-quality camera, microphone, and studio lighting are already installed in this quiet sound proofed room, ready for you to walk in and start recording. It is compatible with Zoom for either live or prerecorded videos, and with PowerPoint, allowing you to bring in any content you may need for your lecture.

Podcast Room

For a clean, professional sounding audio, the podcast room is ideal.

Reserve your time for the Rapidmooc, learning glass, or podcast room through the HSC Event Management System.  For inquiries regarding the DIY options in the DAI, feel free to contact the DAI Media Team during regular business hours.

Zoom

With the advent of the pandemic, Zoom became the tool of choice for recording course lectures. However, improved technologies now provide other options.

Which option is for me?

  • If new videos are created for the entire course, Canvas Studio is suggested. Using Studio streamlines the media creation process by providing creation, curation, and integration all within the Canvas LMS.
  • If Mediasite is currently used in a course and only a portion of the videos are being remade, continue using Mediasite.

For consultations on larger-scale productions, including demonstrations, case-based interactive media, gamification, and more, please contact the Director of the Educational Media Team, Stephen McBroom, at stephen.mcbroom@unthsc.edu to explore exciting possibilities for enhancing your instructional materials.
