Research award highlights big weekend for Physical Therapy Program

Howe Liu, MPT, PhD, was named Outstanding Physical Therapy Researcher for 2014 during the Texas Physical Therapy Association in Galveston.

Known for his expertise in research design and protocol, Dr. Liu was instrumental in initiating projects that resulted in several publications, including how a certain genetic disorder impacts physical function in children. He is currently the principal investigator on a $100,000 grant to examine how use of a smart walker could reduce falls.

Dr. Liu, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, was selected for the honor by a committee of researchers from throughout the state.

"Dr. Liu is not only a tremendous researcher, but he also is a true mentor who fosters the research efforts of others," said Clayton Holmes, PT, EdD, Chair of Physical Therapy. "His efforts result in the development of future researchers for Texas and internationally."

Dr. Liu’s selection for the award highlighted a strong presence by UNT Health Science Center’s four-year-old Physical Therapy Program at the TPTA conference. UNTHSC faculty made 15 presentations during the event.

Michael Connors, PT, DPT, OCS, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, serves as president of the Texas Physical Therapy Association, and he presented the Research Award to Dr. Liu. The organization’s mission is to optimize the health and well-being of people in Texas by advancing physical therapist practice.
