National Expert to Speak about Health Care Cost Reductions Aug. 29 at Health Science Center

Franklin Dexter, MD, PhD, who has focused his research on improving operating room management and anesthesia efficiency, will discuss health care cost reductions at a lunch seminar Aug. 29 at UNT Health Science Center.

Dr. Dexter is nationally known for his expertise in increasing operating room efficiency through better use of personnel, equipment, drugs and supplies.

â??Much of our cultural background and training in the United States focuses on working fast and doing things quickly,â? Dr. Dexter said. â??The notion is that if we speed up and work more efficiently, while working just as safely, then we can save money and/or care for more patients. Sometimes working faster can truly reduce costs, but often it cannot.â?

Currently, Dr. Dexter serves as professor in the departments of anesthesia and health management and policy at the University of Iowa. He has published more than 200 papers in the fields of operating room management and anesthesia and has given more than 85 presentations throughout the United States and abroad. As director of the Division of Management Consulting in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Iowa, Dr. Dexter has performed more than 140 consultations for 20 companies and over 60 surgical suites.

Dr. Dexter earned a bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics and biology with honors from Brown University, masterâ??s and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering with a specialization in biomathematics from Case Western Reserve University, and an MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Iowa.

His presentation â??Health Care Cost Reduction from Small Reductions in Timeâ? will take place from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Center for BioHealth, room 200 on the UNT Health Science Center campus.
