Cowtown Marathon sees record participants for second straight year

More than 21,000 runners filled the streets of Sundance Square on Saturday, Feb. 27, for the annual Cowtown races – shattering the record of 17,829 set just last year.

The Cowtown, sponsored by UNT Health Science Center, has grown by more than 7,000 participants in just the last two years. The addition of the ultra marathon in 2008 and the C.A.L.F. (Children’s Activities for Life & Fitness) Program this year have contributed to the increased numbers.

Funds raised through C.A.L.F. provided scholarships allowing 600 area youths to be a part of the Kids 5K. The program also supplied approximately 200 pairs of running shoes for the young participants.

This year, the Cowtown teamed up with the Leukemia Society Team in Training (TNT) for the 10K race. Team members of TNT raised $20,000 in pledges for their participation.
