Stigma in SUDs

The Addictions Interest Group is deeply committed to dismantling the stigma surrounding addiction. We advocate for the adoption of non-stigmatizing language to foster understanding and compassion within our communities.

The Recovery Research Institute has developed an “Addictionary” of commonly used terms related to addiction, with stigmatizing words marked by “stigma alerts” that include an evidence-based explanation for how the language contributes to stigma.

Additionally, Words Matter – Terms to Use and Avoid When Talking About Addiction from the National Institutes of Health’s NIDAMED emphasizes the importance of using person-first language when discussing addiction.
