Experience is the best teacher, and experienced physicians have much to teach the next generation.

To help pass the torch, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine students co-founded a study group for sharing knowledge among the young people and experienced local doctors. It’s called the Fort Worth Osteopathic Study Group, which the students co-created with local physician Sheila Page, DO.

For this accomplishment and many more, the TCOM chapter of the Student American Academy of Osteopathy was named National Chapter of the Year at the 2016 American Academy of Osteopathy Convocation in Orlando, Fla.  The TCOM chapter stood out among the 38 U.S. osteopathic medical schools for best exemplifying the spirit of the SAAO through excellent programming, events and community outreach.

The study group meets monthly to discuss topics including the use of osteopathic manipulative medicine in treating cancer, how ribs affect respiration and incorporating OMM into brief office visits. Physicians can receive continuing medical education credit for the sessions.

By participating in the group, students have an opportunity to connect with local physicians, Dr. Page said.

“Learning from someone who has years and years of experience and can help the students apply knowledge to patients is very important,” she said. “This study group adds value to their education by connecting the past, present and future.”

The SAAO chapter also has sponsored additional learning opportunities for students covering topics including OMM in sports medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics and obstetrics and provided community education at events including the Hispanic Wellness Fair and Cowtown Marathon.
