Distribution of 3rd Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine for Immunocompromised Patients

HSC Faculty, Staff & Students:

Since January 2021, HSC Health has been working diligently to provide our patients, faculty, staff and students with access to COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines continue to be the safest, most effective way to reduce your risk of infection from COVID-19 as well as reduce the risk of severe symptoms, hospitalization and death should you contract COVID-19.

This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized a 3rd dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer- BioNTech and Moderna) for certain people with weakened immune systems. This dose is recommended to maximize efficacy of immunity against COVID-19. Research has shown that people with weakened immune systems may not have developed a full immune response following the two-dose series. Some examples include:

Organ or stem-cell transplant
Do not have a spleen
In renal failure and are on dialysis
Cancer or cancer treatment
Other conditions that reduce the immune system response

HSC Health will begin providing 3rd dose for immunocompromised people beginning Wednesday, September 1, by appointment. If you qualify for a 3rd dose and would like to receive it on the HSC campus, you can call Priority Care at 817-735-2273 or Student Health at 817-735-5051. Please know you did not have to receive your first two doses at HSC Health.

At HSC Health, we are committed to keeping our community safe. We will continue to offer vaccines for unvaccinated or partially vaccinated patients, faculty, staff and students.

Incorporating Health Literacy in Community Engagement – FREE Webinar Wed Sept 8 at 10am (Sponsored by NNLM Region 3)

The Network of the National Library of Medicine Region 3, housed at the Gibson D. Lewis Library, would like to invite you to join us for the next session of our NEW monthly webinar series, Health Bytes with Region 3.

This monthly 1 hour series will focus on topics of interest to clinicians, researchers, faculty, and information professionals.

Written and digital materials are a fundamental component of engaging the community in health education programming. Unfortunately, many adults lack the skills they need to understand and use these materials, many of which do not incorporate common health literacy and plain language best practices. The UAMS Center for Health Literacy has a suite of written and digital materials to engage patients and community members to better care for themselves and improve health literacy skills. These resources were designed to empower individuals to communicate more effectively with providers and to engage in better self-care.

This month’s presentation will highlight a suite of community engagement resources and provide an overview of development process including field testing and plain language best practices.
