It’s with happiness and a bit of sadness that we announce the retirement of TCOM’s Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health, W. Paul Bowman, MD. Dr. Bowman has been with TCOM since 2008 and his last day will be Wednesday, March 31st.
His distinguished career in medicine and pediatrics has spanned nearly 50 years. Dr. Bowman has served the Fort Worth community as a Senior Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist at Cook Children’s Hospital since 1982.
In 2013, the Fort Worth Business Press named Dr. Bowman a Hometown Hero and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Bowman was recognized with the Cook Children’s Physician Network “Distinguished Physician” Award in 2003.
Fort Worth Magazine, D-Magazine and Texas Monthly have named Dr. Bowman as a Top Doc, Best Doc and a Super Doctor on numerous occasions. The Wish with Wings recognized Dr. Bowman as an “Honored Hero, Butterfly Wishes” in 2018.
He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Cancer Society, Fort Worth Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Coalition. the Texas Pediatric Society, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics.
During his remarkable career, Dr. Bowman has had 132 articles published and 52 abstracts. At TCOM, he has been a member of our Admissions Committee, the Student Performance Committee and our Executive Committee. He has been a mentor and inspiration for a countless number of faculty and TCOM graduates who pursued pediatric careers. We wish him and his wife Lois all the best in his retirement!
I’m very excited to announce that we have appointed TCOM graduate Priya Bui, DO, FAAP as the Interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health. Dr. Bui is a 2011 graduate of TCOM and has been with our Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health since 2014. She has been the Clinical Chief of Pediatrics since 2017 and is a Fellow in the Academy of Medical Educators.
Upon graduating TCOM, she completed her residency training at the Oklahoma University Pediatric Residency in Tulsa. She was the Graduate Pediatric Residency Program Physician of the Year in 2014. She returned to TCOM in 2014 as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics.
Dr. Bui is a mentor for the student Pediatric Research Program and was the Director and Founder of the Teen Clinic. She is the developer for innovations such as the pediatric mental health wellness calls program and a drive-up vaccine option protocol for patients. She has developed innovations during the COVID-19 pandemic including pediatric mental health wellness calls and drive-up vaccine options for patients. She has served as a member of the Education Committee and Quality Improvement Committee at HSC. She is a current member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Students Association and the Texas Medical Association. She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2017 and served on the Gold Humanism Advisory Committee from 2018-2020.
Dr. Bui was the recipient of the Pediatric Teacher of the Year in 2016, 2018 and 2020. She has been named a Top Doc by Fort Worth Magazine five straight years, 2016 through 2020. DFW Magazine also named her a Top Doctor in 2018 and 2019. Dr. Bui received the “Mom Approved Award” in 2017 from Fort Worth Child Magazine.
Dr. Bui is on the Medical Education Academic Committee at Cook Children’s Hospital, a physician leader for Healthy Steps and served on the Asthma 411 Medical Advisory Council. Dr. Bui considers Dr. Bowman a mentor as a pediatrician and educator.
