SPH Solutions Series – Personal Geographies & Public Health: Empowering Communities with Insights from Mobile and GIS Technologies

Presentation by Dr. Thomas Kirchner on January 15, 2019 from noon – 1pm in EAD 703

Dr. Kirchner is Assistant Professor of Public Health, Medicine, and Urban Science at NYU, and founding director of the NYU mHealth (mobile health) lab, where mobile technologies are used to study health-related behavior and decision-making in real-world contexts.  In this presentation, Dr. Kirchner will describe a new crowd-sourced community project that includes over 40,000 NYC neighborhood drawings submitted to an online GIS portal by New York residents, as well as a NYU/Moore-Sloan seed-grant that has allowed the team to train a state-of-the-art computer vision system to recognize and classify street-level tobacco product displays from huge repositories of “street-view” images. These projects involve faculty and students from a range of disciplines, as well as public-private collaboration with technology start-ups, Industry partners, and public health agencies.

Lunch will be provided for the first 20 attendees
