Paid summer research opportunity for TCOM students- Medical Student Training in Aging Research – MSTAR – Applications Open

1. AFAR – MSTAR program: a national level program.

This is an excellent paid summer research opportunity for TCOM students with $1,980 per month stipend. The TCOM students who will have completed Year-I by June 2019 are eligible to attend the program. Please follow this link for more details:

Scholars will be chosen by their academic excellence, interest in geriatrics, and potential for success. Please click here for the application guidelines. Applicants will compete for approximately 100 scholarships at seven National Training Centers (NTC) supported by the National Institute on Aging. Please note that applicants must have a faculty sponsor/mentor to apply. Detailed information on the sponsor requirements is available here.
The stipend level is approximately $1,980 per month; actual amounts will vary based on the specific appointment period of individual students. Students who elect to participate in the scholarship program at a National Training Center will not receive additional funds for travel and housing. The length of research time is determined by the student in consultation with the research mentor, but a minimum of 8 weeks of time is required and up to 12 weeks of funding may be available (some National Training Centers have predetermined program lengths).

2. UNTHSC- MSTAR program: Institute level program sponsored by IHA.

Deadline for application is March 1st, 2019.

We are seeking applications from TCOM students for the Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program administered by the Institute for Healthy Aging (IHA) at UNTHSC. This is a paid summer research opportunity with $1000/month stipend. The MSTAR-IHA program will provide TCOM students (who will have completed Year-I by June 2019) an educational experience in geriatrics clinics and aging-related research, under the guidance of top experts in geriatrics and aging. The students will participate in Clinical shadowing in geriatrics that will be counted towards TCOM Year-II preceptor requirement. The students will be introduced to research and academic experiences early in their training that they might not otherwise have during medical school. This is 6-week structured research, clinical preceptor in geriatrics, appropriate to their level of training and interests. Research projects are offered in clinical/basic/ translational or health services research relevant to older people. The scholars will do their training and research during summer 2019. The students will compete for a total 6 awards.
Student’s will be notified on 15th March 2019 regarding selection.
Program dates June 3rd – July 12th, 2019. (tentative dates depends on the TCOM schedule. Might vary by 1 week.)
