The oxygen cascade as a therapeutic target in patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury: a translational perspective”.

The human brain is highly vulnerable to injury in settings where its oxygen delivery is compromised. A protracted phase of low oxygen levels in the brain that may occur following ischemic and/or traumatic insults, termed secondary brain hypoxia, is related to ongoing brain injury and worse outcome in patients with acute brain injury. Recent research in this field will be presented with a focus on post-cardiac arrest patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, including insights from intra-parenchymal brain monitoring. Future avenues of research stemming from these recent works will be discussed.
