“Type 2 Diabetes, Cognition and Mitochondria: A Pilot HABLE Study”

Dr. Phillips is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics. Her research interests are diverse, having evolved from roots in forensic genetics to studying genetic aspects of age-related, complex disease and comorbidity. Her laboratory has three main focus areas: (1) studies of mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial function, in the context of various disease states such as Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes; (2) genetic aspects of pain and pain management, as the Director for Genomic Research for PRECISION Texas; and (3) genetic risk for age-related disease and comorbidity patterns, via genome-wide genotyping, methylation profiling and data mining. Her presentation will focus on many facets of mitochondrial genetics and function in the context of both type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Her work in this space has been facilitated by collaboration with the Health & Aging Brain Among Latino Elders study.
