Contrasting Different Pedagogies as Vehicles for Enabling Self-Directed Learning

The Department of Medical Education hosts a monthly faculty series. Each month a speaker is selected to discuss elements of faculty development, including active learning, integrating content across a curriculum, and human dimensions of teaching.

For this presentation, Dr. Andrew Bergemann from the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin will discuss the the relative strengths of different pedagogies in enabling students to develop self-directed learning (SDL) skills. In particular, Dr. Bergemann will focus on the efficacy of widely used pedagogies in meeting LCME-prescribed standards for SDL. His session will take the form of an interactive lecture, in which audience members will engage in group exercises to answer questions relevant to SDL. These exercises will be targeted toward identifying opportunities to improve existing pedagogies with regards to their performance in teaching SDL.

Those attending this presentation will receive information that should allow them to:
1. Describe the components of self-described learning (SDL), as outlined by the LCME.
2. Describe the limitations of TBL and large-group sessions for achieving SDL.
3. Describe the components of PBL necessary to fulfill LCME expectations of SDL.
4. Describe the relationship of SDL to other components of the curriculum.
