Purchase of property at 550 Bailey Ave.

President Michael Williams sent this email to all team members on July 1, 2019:

Team,

You are probably aware that space is at a premium at UNTHSC. We are experiencing an exciting period of growth in the academic services and research capabilities we offer — but our inventory of classrooms and laboratories has not kept up.

To lessen this growing challenge, UNTHSC has purchased property at 550 Bailey Ave., three blocks from campus.

Much of the property, which includes a seven-story building and a parking garage, is leased by other businesses. This will continue under UNTHSC ownership and serve as a new revenue stream for the University. The building also contains about 20,000 square feet where UNTHSC will relocate some administrative offices, allowing us to convert more space on campus to laboratories and classrooms.

No classrooms or laboratories will be housed in the new building.

In enlarging the physical footprint of the University, we continue to approach problem solving with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. And we’re committed to providing our faculty, students and staff with state-of-the-art facilities.

A review of which administrative offices will relocate to the Bailey Avenue property is underway and should be completed before the end of the fiscal year.
