Fitness Center FAQ

Q: Why is the payment structure for Fitness Center Membership changing?

Answer: Over the course of the last five years, the UNTHSC student population has grown by 35% however, the state funding that supports the operating budget for the division of student affairs has only grown by 5%. Additionally, the student population is expected to increase by another 4-5% in the Fall of 2016. During the budgeting cycle for the coming fiscal year (2016-2017), the division of student affairs was asked to reduce our state allocated funds by 4%. This was necessitated by state, UNT System, and UNTHSC budget priorities. Therefore, we are now providing services for roughly 40% more students with minimal additional funds. As a result, we have prioritized the programs and services we currently provide to the campus and the community. Those offices that are related to compliance, accreditation, and academic support were budgeted as priorities. The second level of priorities were the student development and student organization programs. Third on the list were auxiliary services such as the fitness center. The budget needed to sustain the current level of services within the division is in excess of the available funds for the coming fiscal year. Therefore, we decided to implement an activity center use fee. The purpose of this fee is to enable the fitness center to become a self-sustaining auxiliary enterprise.
