Valubility of the Month June 2022

Nominated by Dr. Rachel Menegaz for Serve Others First

The Structural Anatomy and Rehabilitation Sciences discipline (Alexa Kelly, Libby Bradley, Courtney Miller, Taylor Robertson, Indya Thompson) and the president of the TCOM Student National Medical Association (Asya Pitre) designed and implemented an AMAZING summer program for 9th grade students at the Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences. The Summer Bridge Program is a 4-day program that welcomes 100 new TABS students to the HSC campus and gives them an opportunity to explore careers in the biomedical sciences through hands-on activities and mentorship by HSC students. This team of HSC students led the TABS students through 9 activities over 4 days: an anatomy lab, a forensic osteology lab, a neuromuscular reflex clinic, a medical imaging lab, a digestive/GI anatomy lab, a suturing clinic, a surgical scrub-in clinic, a Q&A career panel, and a White Coat Ceremony. This program is so incredibly formative and impactful for the TABS students, who will continue to visit HSC and be mentored by HSC students during their 4 years in the TABS high school. Some of these TABS students will also eventually become HSC students themselves. Our HSC students put an extraordinary amount of time and energy into this program on top of their very busy schedules, and I would like to see them acknowledged for being so inspirational to the next generation of biomedical sciences students.
