President Now and Next

I am proud to lead UNTHSC. Many of you know that I graduated from TCOM in 1981, and I have the honor of being the first alumnus to serve as President of this university. Like so many other alums, I have a strong desire to give back.

Alumni are among UNTHSC’s greatest ambassadors. They strengthen our brand in the community, establish life-long learning connections, and mentor and advise our providers of the future. Alumni are UNTHSC advocates, leaders, volunteers and donors.

Our alumni include Drs. Witold, Henri and Alexandre Migala, whose global adventures are making the world a healthier place. They were highlighted in the April issue of Solutions magazine.

Dr. TeCora Ballom rose to become U.S. Assistant Surgeon General and returned to inspire incoming students at our White Coat Ceremony.

Dr. Jeff Beeson not only leads the transformation of UNT Health but regularly volunteers his time to participate in student roundtables, community events and more.

The list goes on, but these examples illustrate the wealth of talents our alumni offer. In recent years, UNTHSC has made a priority of enhancing engagement with alumni and building a sense of community among current students, which lays the foundation for meaningful future relationships.

There are many signs of progress:

  • Membership on HSC Connect, an engagement platform that connects the UNTHSC community, has swelled to 1,600 alumni, students, retirees and team members.
  • Last year, we relaunched our student alumni association, HSC for Life, which already has 230 student members.
  • More than 120 alumni have generously donated to sponsor a stethoscope – in some cases multiple stethoscopes – for incoming TCOM students in whose shoes they once stood.
  • Our Office of Community and Alumni Relations has planned alumni events and class reunions for graduates spanning from 1976 to 2009, as well as increased alumni engagement at professional conferences.

Our success is powered by a shared commitment to our values and creating a sustainable people culture that fortifies our bond. Together, we’re creating a people-first culture that inspires a lifelong connection to UNTHSC, unbound by time or distance.

I appreciate all that you do.
