Career Development

Residency counseling? Clinical rotations? Help with ERAS?

The TCOM Career Development Office works with medical students from matriculation through graduation. The TCOM Career Development Office meets with the TCOM Advisory Colleges during year one to present a high-level look at the residency application process during the spring of year one. They also conduct several AAMC Career in Medicine Workshops to introduce students to the comprehensive Careers in Medicine website created by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The website requires a ‘token’ for full access. You may request your token from Lauren Goodpaster. We encourage you to establish an account during year one.

During year two, a GME/Residency Program Coordinator and Lauren Goodpaster; Career Development Coordinator and Residency Counselor, will meet with the second year students each fall for the Careers in Medicine (CiM) Workshop to discuss a more detailed look at the residency process and spark discussion about ways in which to be more competitive for your chosen specialty…and simply learn more about the residency application process. *The lunches are a required part of the TCOM curriculum; each student must attend one session.

During year three, students participate in required Residency Counseling with Melva Landrum; Assistant Director and Residency Counselor from the TCOM Career Development Office to discuss strategy, competitiveness, board scores, specialty selection, and programs of interest. During these meetings, students will learn which programs they are realistically competitive for. Each third year student will receive and email during the fall semester with a link to schedule a Residency Counseling Appointment.

During year four, the TCOM Career Development Office is available to assist TCOM students with follow-up residency counseling right up until Match Day. We realize that some students may require several meetings, and are happy to assist you!

*Additionally, they are available to meet with year one and two students for pre-residency counseling…those that wish to discuss what they can do to be more competitive for specific specialties or those who have general concerns and are seeking professional advice.

For any of the services above, you can contact TCOM Career Development.
