Eun-Young Mun, PhD, Professor, Department of Health Behavior and Health Systems at the HSC School of Public Health, has received a five-year K02 Independent Scientist Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for her work titled, “Optimizing Brief Alcohol Interventions for Young Adults via Computational Methods.”

This K02 career development grant is awarded to independent scientists with current peer-reviewed R01 funding, supporting up to five years of compensation for a period of intensive research focus to enhance their careers in public health and health-related areas. The aim of the grant is to prepare a generation of veterans in these fields to combat the growing challenges affecting human health as a whole. In the last 10 years, NIAAA has supported four to six investigators annually.

Dr. Mun’s research broadly focuses on providing evidence-based recommendations to major stakeholders for reducing alcohol misuse among young adults. She has achieved this by compiling data from brief alcohol intervention studies and innovatively analyzing them.

She joined the HSC School of Public Health faculty in 2018 and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) of an ongoing NIAAA-supported R01 project called “Project INTEGRATE” since 2010. Project INTEGRATE is widely recognized for its transformative influence on the way that researchers understand and evaluate the evidence of personalized feedback interventions for college student drinking.

During her career, Dr. Mun has led pioneering studies recognizing and addressing methodological gaps for important real-life questions. In the process, she has supported PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, serving as mentor and guide, often bringing them into NIH studies with far-reaching implications and a path toward future research careers in both academia and industry.

If you could work on any kind of research what would it be?

I found my calling as a public health researcher. Everyday, I feel like a superhero showing up to work to make the world a healthier and safer place. I am fortunate to get to work with brilliant collaborators who share a similar passion. To mix metaphors, it sometimes feels like we are a ragtag team of rebels who are scraping together resources to fight the powerful industries that are making drugs sexy and readily available to kids. And I get to help mentor the next generations of rebels/superheroes/public health researchers! There’s nothing I’d rather do.

In the nearly certain event that I need to disappear and start a new life, you might find me studying martial arts. I’ve been involved in combative sports since I was 5 years old, when I started training in karate, kick boxing and jiu jitsu. Although you might not think of this as “research,” it involved some memorable first experiences with hypothesis testing and developing theories. Why did this technique work (or fail)? Which steps are necessary, and which could be modified to make the maneuver more adaptable to different situations? I enjoy the physical experimentation and rapid feedback. Every opponent is a puzzle.

FORMS-G – We’re ready, are you?

Hopefully, you’ve already seen notices on the pending transition to an updated set of grant application forms we refer to as FORMS-G. If so, you already know that you must use FORMS-G forms for grant application due dates on or after January 25, 2022, and FORMS-F for due dates on or before January 24, 2022. NIH Other Support – Changes

NIH has updated the Other Support document for applications and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPR) submitted for due dates on or after January 25, 2021.

• The format page has been reorganized to separate funded projects from in-kind contributions.
• Signature block added for Program Director/Principal Investigator or Other Senior/Key Personnel to certify the accuracy of the information submitted. Each PD/PI or Senior/key Personnel must electronically sign their respective Other Support form as a PDF prior to submission.

Update on Timeline of Effort Certification

Big news! Katie and Robyn have been participating on the process improvement team for effort certification processes. As one of the results of the deep dive into the improvement of processes, we are moving to certifying twice a year instead of the current quarterly cycle. Stay tuned for details on the new due dates in deadlines.

Payroll Cost Transfers Updates

Another update resulting from the process improvement deals with Payroll Cost Transfer forms. These are needed when we are doing retro payroll allocation actions and were previously always signed by the project or account holders as well as OSP and ORS. After a successful pilot in SPH by ORS, these forms no longer need signatures when they are occurring less than 90 days or do not cross the FY.

What does this mean? Less administrative burden and a quicker submission process for ePARs at time of need, such as when a projectid budget is loaded after the start date of efforts.

ORS Team Highlights – December 2021

Katie, Keith and Robyn participated in the NCURA Region V (Texas/Oklahoma) fall conference in Fort Worth.  It was our first in-person meeting in more than a year.  Keith oversaw tech support for the meeting.  Katie co-presented a concurrent session titled Close Outs and Cost Share. Robyn co-presented a concurrent session titled Hosting Foreign Visitors on Campus:  Hosting Strategies and Compliance Considerations.

Katie, Keith and Robyn participated in the Fall NIH Virtual Conference.
