Education & Experience:
I hold a PhD and an MPH in Behavioral and Community Health from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and a BA degree in Sociology from Bates College. During the last year of my PhD program at UNTHSC, I worked as a Project Coordinator with the Texas Center for Health Disparities and managed the SHE Tribe program – a social network-based healthy lifestyle intervention program – and the Community Engagement Core, both funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests:
I have been involved in community health since 2013. During my PhD program, I worked on a wide array of community programs including projects pertaining to homelessness, community reentry of incarcerated women, intimate partner violence, financial stability and women’s wellness. Since 2018, I have continued to work on public health projects funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The graduate program also provided me with multiple opportunities to teach and mentor students. I taught a master’s-level course on program evaluation as a Teaching Fellow. and provided teaching assistance for several other graduate-level courses. I also supervised service-learning projects and helped students build partnerships with community organizations.
Professional Activities & Awards:
As a UNTHSC doctoral student, I received awards for Outstanding Student Oral Presentation from the Texas Public Health Association in 2015 and 2017. I also received the UNTHSC School of Public Health Dean’s Award for Scholarly Excellence in Research in 2018 and 2019.
Scholarly Interests:With a background in program planning and evaluation strategies, I have worked on research topics focused on homelessness and health, intimate partner violence, women’s wellness, community reentry and financial stability. I have recently begun work on latent tuberculosis prevention and treatment. I am also involved in strengthening community engagement in research within the UNTHSC community.
