Notice to Students regarding Physical Therapy Licensing

Effective September 1, 2017, HB 1508 created new laws that require entities that provide educational programs leading to an occupational license to notify all applicants and enrollees of the implications of a felony conviction which may make you ineligible for a physical therapy license upon program completion.  The law requires that this information be provided to all persons who apply or enroll in a physical therapy program without regard to whether the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.

You may review the current guidelines used by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners to determine the eligibility of the person to be licensed on the Board’s website at http://www.ptot.texas.gov/page/act-and-rules.  You also have a right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the Board and the applicable request form is available on the Board’s website at  http://www.ptot.texas.gov/page/home.

Physical Therapy Licensure

All 50 states and The District of Columbia Physical Therapy Licensure Boards recognize the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited physical therapy program as fulfilling the academic requirements for physical therapy licensure. In addition, the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) administers the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), the examination that every graduate of a physical therapy program must pass to become a licensed physical therapist in the United States. CAPTE maintains national accreditation standards for physical therapy programs. The UNTHSC DPT program is CAPTE accredited and program graduates are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination after successfully completing program requirements.
