Elizabeth J. Protas, PT, PhD
Vice President and Dean

University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

Protas, chairwoman of the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Professions, came to UTMB in 2002. She earned her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research interests include geriatrics, rehabilitation of adults with stroke, Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury. She has received numerous honors and awards during her career, most recently the Herbert H. deVries Award for Distinguished Research in the Field of Aging.

Dr. Protas has published over 50 manuscripts and book chapters.  She has received grant funding from the National Institute of Health, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the Foundation for Physical Therapy to support her research.
