Accreditation and Licensure
The UNTHSC Animal Care and Use Program is a voluntary member of AAALAC International, and is subject to a rigorous accreditation inspection/review. The program has maintained FULL ACCREDITATION since February 8, 1985. In the most recent site visit, which is conducted every three years, the Animal Care and Use program at UNTHSC was commended for “providing and maintaining an exemplary program of laboratory animal care and use…”
AAALAC International accreditation is recommended by major funding associations such as the American Heart Association, and is required by some federal funders such as the U.S. Department of Defense.
In addition, as a USDA licensed research institution, the facility and program undergo unscheduled USDA site visits and inspections. The program has achieved 25 consecutive USDA inspection with no “non-compliant” items.
